Although recent hot weather conditions have temporarily lifted the North American power markets, broad fundamentals remain bearish. Most regional power markets are flush with supply as a substantial amount of new generating capacity continues to come online, driven by prerecession expectations of electric demand growth. Spot natural gas prices are likely heading further down in the short term and will keep spot power prices weak. --8/2/2010

Northeast Power Market Fundamentals, 2010-15
Hot summer weather provided a jolt to power demand and wholesale prices in 2010, but the effects will be short-lived. Power demand is expected to grow by 3.6 percent in 2010 before falling back to 0.5 percent in 2011. Excess supply in most regional markets and low natural gas prices will keep wholesale power prices under pressure in the near term. --8/13/2010

EPA's Ash Proposal Starts the Clock on a Decision Year for Coal
On May 4, 2010, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the release of its long-awaited proposal to regulate coal ash, a by-product of coal-fired electricity generation. Once final, EPA's ash rule will affect nearly 600 surface impoundments or ash ponds, 300 landfills, and a multibillion-dollar-per-year ash recycling industry. --5/20/2010
