European storage levels continued to climb throughout August 2010, however, lower fill levels in the final week of August saw storage levels close at 88 percent. This is similar to the 2009 figure of 89 percent, and below 2008 at 94 percent. The picture varies from country to country with fill levels peaking at around 95 percent in Belgium, Denmark, and Germany, while in Spain and the United Kingdom fill levels were behind the usual schedule, at around 82 percent.

European power prices have been unusually strong in the summer of 2010 because of high gas prices. However, we expect this effect to abate next year. The Industrial Emissions Directive passed its second reading in the European Parliament on July 7 and will lead to plant retirements in 2015 and thus projected higher power prices.

China's natural gas demand continues to rise rapidly, driven by residential and industrial users. Gas supply is still a constraint, and the government finally announced an increase in end-user prices, partly to encourage supply. The increase in residential demand has also made the need for additional peak shaving and storage capacity more urgent.

At a CERAWEEK Strategic Session on March 12 entitled “Smart Grids: Making the Connections” a panel of senior power industry executives provided delegates with some valuable lessons learned from their early-adopter experiences with smart grid projects, business cases, and strategies. Three main themes emerged: the existence of gaps between perception and reality, the necessity of pricing for customers and incentives for utilities, and the unexpected places where smart grid’s value resides.
