Global Steam Coal Market Update: Chinese Coal Production Growth Poised to Weaken International Coal Prices August 31, 2010
International steam coal prices remain steady, as IHS CERA has expected, but this stability is coming under pressure from the supply side. Record production levels in China are outpacing the staggeringly high demand growth at the moment, threatening a steam coal surplus and lower prices there, with perhaps subsequent downward adjustments in international prices.

IHS CERA Roundtable Conference: Energy Markets and the Economic Recovery July 12, 2010
The June 8 IHS CERA Roundtable Conference in Rome focused on the interconnected issues facing oil, gas, coal, and power markets. Key points were that the world economy is recovering, but the pace varies by region; supply and demand are out of balance in the oil, gas, carbon, and power markets; and the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is not expected to have a major effect on oil supplies.

European Coal-fired Generation Data July 8, 2010
These spreadsheets show generation patterns for coal-fired generation across Europe. They show coal’s market share, estimated burn, and unutilized capacity, by month, quarter, and year.

Global Steam Coal Market Update: Falling Freight Rates Signal a Step Change July 6, 2010
Dry bulk freight rates are on the brink of a major slowdown, as the rate of fleet growth is set to outstrip prospective increases in demand to a massive degree. The effects of this on the global steam coal market will be to narrow the differentials between short-haul and long-haul ocean freight costs, making the prospects for increased movements of steam coal from the Atlantic Basin to Asia Pacific much better than they have been since the early 2000s.

Diversification of Supply Brings New Dynamics to China's Energy Markets June 9, 2010
The rapid energy demand recovery accompanying China’s economic rebound has prompted energy producers to seek out new supply resources—from new geographic locations (in the case of coal and natural gas) or based on new technologies (in the case of power)—which are creating unprecedented dynamics in the energy sector that will require systemic adjustments.

Global Steam Coal Roundtable, Rome June 9, 2010
Past Events:  The global coal industry has experienced events unlike any in its long history recently. In our June 9, 2010, Global Steam Roundtable session in Rome IHS CERA experts David Price, Director, Global Steam Coal; Jone-Lin Wang, Managing Director and Head of Global Power Group; and Federico Ferrario, IHS CERA Associate, European Power, discussed the drivers of these events, and whether global coal trade is likely to resume its traditional profile, or is set for further twists and turns.
