North American Power Markets, 2010-15

Although recent hot weather conditions have temporarily lifted the North American power markets, broad fundamentals remain bearish. Most regional power markets are flush with supply as a substantial amount of new generating capacity continues to come online, driven by prerecession expectations of electric demand growth. Spot natural gas prices are likely heading further down in the short term and will keep spot power prices weak.

Despite an uncertain legislative outlook, the proposal provides an important milestone in the development of a US climate policy.
