The 2009/28 European Commission directive set an aggressive 20 percent target for renewable energy in final energy consumption by 2020, which in the power sector will require about 35 percent of generation from renewables.Renewables trade within the European Union and imports from nonmember countries are allowed by the directive, but few countries are planning significant imports or exports of renewables electricity.

EPA's Transport Rule: Signaling the End of an Era

On Tuesday, July 6, 2010, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released its draft Transport Rule. The new rule would end over a decade-long period of reliance on regional cap-and-trade programs to control power sector sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxide (NOX) emissions and initiate a regime based on state emissions budgets with only limited interstate trading.
