Tighter Supply and Demand Fundamentals Support Crude Oil Prices in 2011

Shifting macroeconomic expectations have kept crude oil prices between $65 and $85 for much of this year. IHS CERA expects prices to remain in the middle of this band to year’s end and increase modestly in 2011, as upstream costs rise a projected 2 percent and the supply-demand balance tightens.

Oil and Equity Markets Keep Watch on the Global Economy

The uncertain geographic reach of the global economic recovery as well as oil's role as a financial market player mean that oil price movements will continue to be influenced by changes in the equity market, the dollar, and sentiment about the global economy. IHS CERA projects that West Texas Intermediate prices will likely rise from an average of $76 per barrel this year to $83 in 2011 and $89 in 2012.

Changing Expectations Lull Oil Prices

The rapid fall in oil prices at the beginning of May underlined the extent to which price movements in the oil market are being influenced by wider financial market volatility prompted by anxiety over Europe's fiscal imbalances. IHS CERA projects West Texas Intermediate and Brent prices to average $72 and $73 per barrel, for the second half of 2010, respectively.
